    Iwan Makarow

    September 25, 1908 - May 25, 2012

Iwan Makarow, 103 died Friday May 25, 2012 at home with his loving wife and others close to him by his side. He was born in Russia on September 25, 1908. He was one of the last surviving Don Cossacks of Russia. They were a frontier military organization in southern Russia which protected the southern border of Russia along the Don River Region. They were known as masters of horse riding and had superb military training. Though there are some differences in tradition and customs, the Don Cossacks spoke the Russian Language and have always related themselves to greater Russia while maintaining their own unique national identity. The Don Cossacks are also credited with playing a significant part in repelling Napoleon's Invasion of Russia. They also fought for the White Army against the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War. The Don Cossacks faith is a Provoslavny one, and they see themselves as its protectors. After immigrating to the United States of America he lived in Plainfield, NJ and New Brunswick, NJ before moving to Hillsborough, NJ 46 years ago. He worked for many years as a steel worker for the Harris Steel Company and then for the Ford Motor Company for many years as a mechanic. Mr. Makarow was very devoted in his Faith and was a Founder and member of the Holy Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Church in New Brunswick, NJ. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Ursula Makarow of Hillsborough, NJ, his daughter Nadejda Makarova of Russia, his niece Anna J. Kelly-Bolbotowski and her son Bobby Clements III of Hillsborough, NJ and his close family friend and caretaker Adrienne LaRocco of Hillsborough, NJ. The viewing will be on Tuesday May 29, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the Ketusky Funeral Home, 1310 Brooks Blvd., Manville, NJ. (908)575-8512.
